Enrichment and Extracurricular GT Activities
Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities are organized events and opportunities to stimulate student’s critical and creative thinking skills. Some are offered during the regular school day and others after school. Each school selects which activities, field trips or services to offer. Some elementary and middle schools prepare students to compete in UIL, Vex Robotics, Team Quest, Quebec, etc. Others offer services from outside providers such as Fab Lab, Snapology, and Young Rambrandts. High schools offer many academic competitions such as Journalism, Speech and Debate, National History Day, High Q and Academic Decatholon. In addition, YISD offers GT Enrichment Programs twice a year for GT students in grades K-12. In these programs, students explore, study and research real-world situations and develop a deeper understanding through hands-on activities of the theme studied. GT Parent Involvement
At the beginning of the school year, schools offer a GT Parent Awareness Meeting to inform parents of what the Gifted and Talented Program is and the services that are offered. Schools also offer a GT Student Showcase where students have an opportunity to show to the community the projects that they worked on throughout the year; and, a family night, where families work on mini projects with their GT child. In addition, every year, the District brings in a specialist in gifted and talented to speak to parents about ways to help them understand their child’s gifted abilities and skill and ways to help their GT child at home.
